It was a night of laughter and luxury. King Belshazzar of Babylon was hosting a lavish feast, surrounded by nobles, gold goblets, and overflowing wine. But then—something happened that silenced the room.
In the middle of the celebration, a mysterious hand appeared and began to write on the wall:
**“MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN.”**
That night, the king’s pride was shattered, and before morning, his life was over.
The question is: what happens when **God’s hand writes on the walls of our hearts**? What does He find when He weighs our lives in His balance?
1. You Have Been Weighed
When God wrote those haunting words, He wasn’t speaking to the crowd—He was speaking to one man. “You have been weighed in the balances and found wanting.”
Belshazzar thought he could hide behind his crown, his power, and his people. But God’s message was personal. And it still is. He sees beyond our titles, our social circles, and our excuses. He counts every hair on our heads and knows the secrets of our hearts.
God’s message may be short, but it’s never shallow. It cuts through the noise and speaks directly to the soul: *You have been weighed.*
Each of us must face the same question—what would the scales of eternity reveal about our hearts? Have we allowed indifference or pride to dull our response to God’s call?
2. The Balances of Eternity
The sobering truth is this: we don’t get to choose **whether** God weighs our lives—only **when**. We can invite His examination now, in grace, or we can face it later, in judgment. God loves us deeply, passionately, and persistently. But His love cannot be manipulated. He will not be toyed with. We can deceive others—even ourselves—but never Him.
When Belshazzar stood before God’s scales, it wasn’t his sin alone that condemned him—it was his attitude of indifference. God never asked for perfection, only sincerity. He never demanded flawlessness, just faithfulness.
But Belshazzar, like so many, gave more of his heart to worldly pursuits than to the One who gave him life. His power, wealth, and pleasure—all the things he built his identity on—were meaningless when God’s judgment came.
When your life is weighed, what will matter most? Not your job, your money, or your success, but your relationship with the living God.
3. The Father Who Still Waits
The message of Daniel 5 is one of warning, but also one of **grace**. The same God who wrote on Belshazzar’s wall still writes on the walls of our hearts—not to condemn us, but to call us home.
There’s a story told of a faithful father who waited at a train station every day for fourteen years, hoping his runaway son would return. Through snow and storms, he stood watch, refusing to give up. And one winter day, his faith was rewarded. The son stepped off the train, and the father ran to him, crying, “My son has come home—home where he belongs.”
That story captures the very heart of God. He waits at every crossroads of our lives, watching for us to return. Even when we’ve wandered, wasted years, or hardened our hearts—He’s still there. The same God who weighs us also welcomes us. The same God who convicts us also calls us home.
Conclusion: Come Home Where You Belong
The message God wrote for Belshazzar was short but eternal: **“You have been weighed in the balances and found wanting.”** But it doesn’t have to end there.
God still calls out, even to those who have wandered far:
*“Come home, son. Come home, daughter. Come home where you belong.”*
The hand that writes judgment on the wall is the same hand that was pierced for your salvation. Let Him weigh your heart today—not to condemn you, but to forgive you, restore you, and welcome you home.
